The principal aim of this study was to comprehend the nature of labor within the gem polishing industry and to assess the hazards confronted by children employed in this sector. Additionally, the research sought to pinpoint processes that pose no risks to children and explore the feasibility of limiting child employment to non-injurious tasks. The survey encompassed over 500 units, involving in-depth discussions with children across different age groups.
The study provides an overview of the historical and contemporary facets of the Indian gem industry, noting an annual export revenue of approximately 1490 crores. It meticulously explains the intricate process of gem polishing, outlining the industry's structure and incorporating visual representations of children engaged in this activity. Subsequently, the document delves into the various challenges associated with child labor in the gem industry.
